Queen Anne's Lace

 

At this time of year in Missouri, the flower, Queen Anne's Lace, abounds. It is a beautiful flower with dozens of little, pure white blossoms making up this single flower. From the top it looks like a mat of delicately knit white lace. But, because of the whiteness of the flower it is difficult to photograph from the top of the flower with good results. Hence, the photograph from the ground up perspective. 

1909 Singer Treadle Sewing Machine

 

My great friend, Blake, made my grandmother's old treadle sewing machine look like new. Thank you. It is a family heirloom that I treasure very much.

St. Louis Lambert Airport and Tornado

 

It has been a little over a year since we were in Terminal C of the St. Louis Airport when it was struck by a tornado. The devastation shown in this image taken a few minutes after the tornado did its damage is now just a memory. The repairs and renovations of the terminal are now complete.

I've loved cat tails since I was a child. The image was modified by a Picasa feature that makes lighted portions of the image appear to be thin.

Grave Stone Inscription -- Dardenne Cemetery

 "Soon shall we meet again.
 Meet ne'r to sever;
Soon will peace wreathe her chain round us forever."

The very old memorials to the dead contained some interesting inscriptions. This was my favorite. I envisioned a marriage and family on the frontier who enjoyed the great gift of family and marital love coupled with the faith that the same sociality that exists in this life will continue in the eternities - the great hope and desire that family bonds last beyond the grave.

Unrelated question: How did the inscriptionist make this inscription? Use a stencil? Free hand?

Dardenne Cemetery

 Established in the early 1800's, this cemetery is a very peaceful spot in the woods. It was beautiful in the early morning light.

(As a photo opportunity, it presented the challenges of obtaining proper exposures due to the predominance of green color. When green is prevalent, a good rule of thumb is that you stop down the aperature by, at least, two thirds of one stop from the metered exposure to avoid overexposure.)

Dardenne Cemetery

We enjoyed an early morning photoshoot at the Dardenne Cemetery located west of Dardenne Creek in the Busch Preserve. It was adjacent to the old, no longer standing, Dardenne Presbyterian Church.  It was worth the thorns, high grass and Missouri woods through which we hiked to find the cemetery, as we accessed it from the Fox Haven Subdivision.
