My Grandparents' home

Josiah and Ada Lee Shurtz built this brick home in 1910 in Escalante, Utah. I have many fond memories visiting them at this home as a small child. During my childhood, the home did not have the porch shown in this photograph nor the green metal roof, rather shake shingles. Then, the front lawn, not rocks, extended out about 40 feet from the front door with a fence around the yard. It was a great yard to play ball with my grandmother. Back of the house was grandma's chicken coop. I Loved to feed the chickens and gather the eggs. Also, my grandparents had the milk cows that provided thick cream for grandma's hot oatmeal for breakfast cooked on the wood stove on the back porch of the house.

Fishing or Sunning?

I snapped this photo of a relaxed fisherperson at Busch Wildlife as she changed the bait on one of two poles she had going. Is she there to catch a lunker or to enjoy the sunshine on a beautiful summer day?

The red car

The youngest granddaughter discovered the red car at Grandma's. She is the latest of grandchildren who love this toy.

I caught this bumble-bee gathering nector from the pink flower. Notice the pollen sticking to its feet. That makes for effective pollinization. (Why is pollen spelled with an "e" and pollinization uses an "i"?)

Waterpocket Fold

This line of rock outcropping thrust up from the surface of the earth extends for slightly more than 100 miles in the southeastern desert of Utah. It is the beginning of a huge landform, a cliff formation of rock known as the Waterpocket Fold that climbs to an elevation of 5745 feet. This enormous land feature can be explored in Capitol Reef National Park, Wayne County, Utah. Some of the magical cliffs, domes, gorges, canyons, rivers and washes in this lesser known national park are shown in subsequent photographs in this blog.

Being with Family

Following are numerous photographs from a week long trip to the national park areas of Southeastern Utah. The scenary was spectacular. The photography was challenging and fun. However, family, like this little chipmunk, made the trip a memory of a lifetime.

Four Wheeling in Canyonlands National Park

My boys had us out on a four wheel drive road near where the Colorado River cuts through Canyonlands. The road was too rough so we continued on foot until we saw this storm approaching. We never did make it to the river overlook.
